Trend Alert! Arty Prints

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Last season designers had us seeing squares (and circles) with digital techno-inspired prints on dresses. For this season, the fashion world shifted to a mix of vintage and contemporary art house prints in which dresses resembled watercolor paintings and the place to go for inspiration is your local art gallery.

The prints on dresses at Louis Vuitton, Anna Sui, Kenzo and Erdem had a vintage feel to them in muted floral prints and the dresses at Kenzo and Anna Sui in particular were a little bit boho , while things were more modern at Diane von Furstenberg, Balenciaga and Proezna Schouler. At Preen and Dries van Noten, vintage floral prints were mixed with contemporary designs.

Chaotic is a good way to describe the way that prints are being mixed and matched this season, but what models can pull off on the catwalk is not as easy to pull off in normal, everyday life. So, by all means do experiment with dresses in mixed prints, but do also choose carefully to look sophisticaed rather than a clown.

Take a leaf out of the desginers' books and keep accessories minimum when wearing a printed dress.

If you are an abaya wearer, a pair of good leggings in black, grey or navy are your best friend. At Anna Sui, printed tunic-like dresses were paired with printed leggings. If you are not in the mood for leggings, try wearing a printed maxi dresses a la Erdem and Kenzo (two trends in one).

The best thing about this trend is that it is versatile and printed dresses can be worn for casual everyday wear and for glam occassions.
